We had our sports day today and we were so lucky with the weather ,no rain. We had egg and spoon, sack race and running races. We went to the field behind the community centre,

Teddy Bears Picnic.

We went on our Teddy Bears Picnic today and had a gret time. We didn't go too far because black clouds were hanging around .We were lucky it didn't rain. We had it under the trees near the big yard, Everybody had lovely teddies and soft toys and a rubbish lunch(sweets and bars). We sat on the parachute we use for P.E cause the ground was damp. Back in class they coloured in a lovely picture and sang teddy songs.

The lettuce ,radishes , potatoes and runner beans are growing well now that the weather has improved. We had 1 ripe strawberry on Friday. They like the bit of heat and sun.

We released our 4 butterflies on Friday . We did it at the trees near the school. It was great fun and the kids loved holding them.

Teacher took the butterfly garden with the caterpillars in it home for the long weekend in case they decided to hatch out. And guess what they did, one on Monday and the other 3 today. I was so glad cause I was able to give them sugary water and leaves. The kids will be so excited when I bring them in tomorrow.

Kites

This week we made lovely kites from cardboard, painted them, put on a face and streamers and bows and strings. There was no shortage of wind this week so we were able go fly them this morning. We also sang " Lets go fly a kite".

Caterpillars

Our caterpillars are now in their cocoons and we transferred them to their butterfly garden today. We will be watching them every day.

Bluetits

Two Bluetits built a nest in teacher's bird house. It is amazing how they construct it. They now have baby birds and the mam and dad are very busy feeding them. I'm not sure how many as I can't peep in in case I disturb them..

Student Teachers

Our 2 student teachers finished their time with us on Friday.They took the kids on a Bear Hunt around the school and had a party in the afternoon. We will miss them and teacher has to go back working on Monday!

Our Magic Beans.

Teacher took the beans home for Easter so that she could keep them watered. They grew very well and we planted them in our raised bed . We will have to replant our vegetables as the weather was so dry over Easter they didn't grow . Our chives are lovely with pink flowers. We made a wigwam from bamboo rods so the beans can climb up. We have 2 student teachers with us for 2 weeks, Miss Costello and Miss Byrne.

We had great fun on Friday on our Easter Egg Hunt. Teacher put chocolate bunnies in coloured plastic eggs and hid them at the side of the school under the trees and long grass.Mrs Carleton came with us on the hunt. They were all found and eaten. Yummy!

Magic Runner Beans.

Today we planted our "magic" runner beans in pots. I read the story of Jack and the Beanstalk first. We will keep them inside till they start to sprout, then we will transfer them to our raised bed. The kids thought they looked like chocolate beans!

We planted vegetables in our raised bed on Friday. We planted, lettuce. beetroot, spinach , radishes and onions ,all from seed. We look forward to their growth.

We planted the the potatoes we had sitting in the egg box on the warm window sill . The eyes had grown. We planted them in a large bag in front of our class.

Experiment: Dissolving and evaporating.

We conducted an experiment on dissolving and evaporating using salt, sugar, flour and cocoa powder, We had a guessing game first and then tried them out. We also put salt in water on a lid and left it overnight on the warm window sill. We had salt crystals the next day. We checked the jars the next day to see if anything had changed..

Crows nest building.

We have lots of ash trees near our school. This past week the crows have been very busy and noisy getting their nests built. We went for a walk to have a closer look and saw them gathering the sticks. We can see them from our window. We will be following their progress.

We decided to pick up the litter in front of our class and in front of the school on Friday. The kids wore the "tidy up " aprons and we used the litter pickers . There was a lot of rubbish. We would ask parents and children not to throw litter in the school grounds. We have lovely Daffodils in front of our class and all around the school grounds. Cillian was 6 on Friday . He was 6 and is the oldest boy in our class. Happy Birthday!!

Fire engine visit

Today we had a visit from a GalwayCity fire engine. It was arranged by one of our teachers Ms Flannery whose husband is a fire fighter . Many thanks to her. The kids were so excited when they were told about the visit. They were all allowed to hold and use the hose and go inside the fire engine. We watched Fireman Sam , sang the Fire Truck song and watched a fire safety d.v.d,

Growing Shamrock

Cosa Beoga , finalists in the All Ireland Talent \show came and performed in our school on Wednesday. They were excellent. . One of the group's Mammy was in Mrs Browne's class many moons ago. They would love us to vote for them on Sunday . Good Luck to all.!

The senior school band paraded around Renmore at 11.30. They were lucky with the weather. The boys and girls have brothers and sisters in the band. They looked great and sounded great.

Thank you to Luca's mam who sent in lovely pancakes today Pancake Tuesday. They were delicous and home made. We went to the staffroom to warm them up in the microwave. They were delighted to go to teacher's kitchen as they called it and sit on the chairs teacher sits on. Teacher read the story " The Big pancake" and they drew pictures after.

Today we had a visit from Storyteller Mary Arrigan. She read one of her own stories for the kids and they enjoyed it, listening and answering questions . She illustrated the book herself. She came this week because of the Book Fair in the halla.

We had a beautiful sunny day today and decided to go for a nature walk. We have a young Horse Chestnut tree near our school so went over to have a look at it. We found it was covered with sticky buds and took photos. I uploadad the photo to the Greenwave.ie site. We take part in the Greenwave project each year.

Our Purple crocuses are in full bloom and look gorgeous in the bright sunshine. We are having lots of visitors to our bird feeder ,especiallly Goldfinches with their lovely red heads.

We had 2 prizewinners in this years Galway City Council Anti-Litter Calendar competition. Congratulations to Chloe from Ms Gillens . class and to Lucia from Ms Cunninghams class. Teddy Bears Hospital.

We had a brilliant day at the "hospital" over in N.U.I. on Friday, organised by second year medical students. A great big thank you to Bryan Reidy and his fellow students. We went on a big orange double decker bus and our class got to go on top with Ms Crotty's and Ms Conneely's class . The students talked to the kids about their teddies in groups of 4, gave them prescriptions, x-rayed the teddies and then collected the medicine. There was bouncy catle and face painting. Alltogether a great day,

Teddy Bear's Hospital.

We were all delighted when our school was one of those chosen to go to The Teddy Bear's Hospital in N.U.I. This is an annual event organised by 2nd year medical students.We put all the class names from Junior and Senior Infants into a hat and the lucky classes were Mrs Brownes, Mrs Treacys, Ms Crottys and MS Conneelys. We are going on Friday the 28th and children will bringing their sick and broken teddies with them. We are all looking forward to the visit.

We had our annual Carol Service on Wed the 22nd despite the bad weather. Thankfully we didn't have to cancel it. Thanks to the parents for dressing up .and bringing the kids to the church. It was really enjoyable and christmasy . Here are some photos.

I made a bird feeder using a drinks bottle, bamboo rod and plastic lid. I put bird seed into it. We will put it out daily and we hope to attract the smaller birds.

We put out a glass of green water on Wednesday at home time. It was frozen solid the following morning. We put out our thermometer each morning this week and we has minus temperatures. We kept a record of the inside and outside temperatures.

Letters to Santa.

We wrote our letters to Santa today. We put them all in 1 envelope and addressed it to the North pole. Then we walked to the Post Office at Duggans. The paths were slippy so we had to be very careful and walked on the grass. Teacher bought the stamp and then we put the envelope the post box. It was lovely walking in the snow, so crunchy underfoot. They really enjoyed it and had no accidents. Our yard is covered in snow so it was great to get out.

Armagh Planetarium.

We had the Stardome from the Armagh Planetarium in school today for Science week. The kids really enjoyed their trip inside the dome and the things they saw.

Which paper absorbs best.

We conducted an experiment to find out which paper absorbs water fastest . We used green food colouring to dye the water green. We used 3 types of paper, kitchen towel, newspaper and photocopying paper. I made a clothes line to hang the paper on. The kids had to choose the paper they thought would win. We pgave the papers 5 minutes to soak the water. The kitchen towel was the clear winner. the majority went for the winner.

I bought a new goldfish in Petworld last week. We put all the name suggestions in a box . It was Emily's 5th birthday so she pulled out the name and it was John, Cillian's suggestion. Parents are welcome to come in and see John the goldfish,

We had our annual sponsored Halloween Walk and this morning. We were vey lucky with the weather, no rain. The kids looked fantastic. Many thanks to the parents for the costumes and the sponsorship money. The teachers also looked great and were hard to recognize.

Dancing raisins experiment.

We conducted an experiment using raisins, tap water and sparkling water. We used the tap water first and they had to guess what would happen, most said they would float. Then we used the sparkling and the raisins started to dance to the top of the glass. They loved watching them dance. We kept an eye on them for quiet a while.

Halloween brack features in our Irish lesson this week, so I purchased one and we had some after 1st break.. It went down very well. We gave the leftovers to the birds. We found the ring and our skeleton Funny Bones is minding it hanging on his leg. we will have a raffle for it on Friday.

We planted 2 Hyacinth bulbs in water. We also have one sitting in water so we can watch the roots grow. They will be kept in the press till the shoots show. We will check them regularly.

The kids painted apple trees using green and brown and gold for the sun. They stuck on fabric apples . I hung some of them out on the corridoor and they are much admired .

I collected blakberries and we had a blackberry tasting session. . They proved very popular and some said they would get mammy to buy some . Luca is allergic to them and couldn't taste them. I brought in some brambles to show them where they grow.

We planted out our onions and potatoes on Wednesday the 24th. We also planted a strawberry plant ,parsley and chives. It was a lovely sunny day. on Thursday we helped Mr O'Riordan, our Home School Liaison teacher to plant raspberry plants out front near the the wall.We look forward to lovely fruits and vegetables.

We will be growing vegetables in our raised bed which was funded by the H.S.E to encourage schools grow vegetables and in turn encourage the kids and parents to do the same at home. We hope to grow ,spuds, onions, radishes, lettuce, climbing beans. cabbage ,strawberries parsley and chives. Ev.erything was supplied. The bed is outside our class and is an ideal spot as it gets lots of sun and is sheltered. We planted the onions inside in a seed tray to give them a good start,, and we have the spuds sitting in an egg box on the window sill , that's called "chitting". We are all excited about the project and look forward to having lits of vegetables.

We had a Spanish student teacher in our class this week. Her name is Isabel and she is from Seville. She is here with her friend . They will be in the school for 5 weeks. We enjoyed having her in our class. She helped teacher and the children , minded at lunchtime, came to the Halla and came for walks. Isabel brought spanish pancakes for the teachers and they were lovely. She took some photos. Today we went to see the buds on the Horsechestnut tree, we found sticky buds. We had snow on Monday and she liked that because they don't get much snow in Spain. She will be going to other classes on Monday.

Experiment

On Tuesday we conducted an experiment on which paper absorbs most. We put green colouring in the water. Teacher made a goalpost like structure using skewers and an icecream container. Teacher stapled 4 types of paper, kitchen towel, kleenex tissue, hand tissue and newspaper on to the goalpost. We had a discussion on spillls and mopping up. The kids had to pick the paper they thought would absorb most and fastest. The majority picked the kichen towel which turned out to be the winner. Teacher put the goalpost in place and we watched to see what would happen. They really enjoyed the experiment.

Anti-Litter calendar competition.

Each year Galway City Council sponsors an anti-litter calendar competition. Our school enters every year, a big thank you to the teachers for encouraging the children. We were lucky once again this year. Vicky from Miss Costelloes 2nd class won a 40 euro voucher for Dubray Bookshop. Her picture is in the calendar for the month of June. Congratulations to Vicky. Well done.

Our Goldfish

Teacher went to Petworld and bought a goldfish. We have a fish tank. We put the names the kids thought of in a hat. The name that came out was Mimsy. The kids will feed it 3 times a week.

We planted 3 Paper Whites, a type of Daffodil in water this week. We put conkers and pebbles in the vase and filled it with water up to the roots of the bulbs. We look forward to having nice flowers.

We have been making some lovely things for
Xmas, angels, santas, rudolph and cribs.We made decorations for the tree from clay. We dried them overnight and painted them .We had great fun making them and will take them home Monday.

Carol Service.

Our annual Carol Service is being held on Monday Dec 21st over in the church at 7 o'clock. All the Junior infant classes will be sitting round the altar. They come to the church all dressed up. We ask the parents to dress them as characters from the nativity play e,g---angels, sheperds and. wise men. This is much appreciated by the teachers. They don't have to dress up to come. We hope they all come and sing all the lovely hymns with all the other classes.

Santa letters.

We wrote our letters to Santa yesterday. We decorated and signed them. We put them in one big envelope. Today we walked to Duggans our local post office, bought a stamp and posted our letters. We look forward to getting our replies. We were lucky to get a fine morning for our walk.

Diving drops and sinking feelings

We did 2 experiments this week from the Discovery Primary Science programme. We did them to show that oil is lighter than water and sits on top and that syrup is heavier and sinks to the bottom. We used green food colouring for the water. We also tried out different materials and papers to see if they would soak up the water and how fast. We used oil, water, food colouring and syrup.

Pinocchio

We had a visit from the West Midlands Theatre Company this week. They performed their version of Pinocchio. They were so good and the kids really enjoyed it and they brought some kids up on stage including Stacey from our class.

Snowdrops and Crocuses.

Today we planted Snowdrops and Crocuses in a round pot. Thanks to Galway city council for the bulbs. We put the pot outside with the other pots.We checked the roots of the hyacinth we sowed in the compost.

It was a wet and miserable day today. We put out our rain gauge at 9.30 and took it in at 1.10. There were 2 millilitres of water in the container. We hope we won't be putting it out too often.

Daffodil bulbs

We planted 20 bulbs this week, 1 for each child. We planted them in a window box and left them outside the classroom, no need to water them as we had lots of rain. We said they had gone to bed for the winter`!

Halloween and our Witches Walk.

We love Halloween in our class and we had lovely decorations in our room. We made pumpkins, cards, spiders and our spiders book and bat masks. Today friday we went on our annual witches walk. Thank you to the parents for all the costumes, witches, vampires, ben ten, pumpkins, princesses, a cat, spiderman and skeletons.Thanks for all the sponsorship. It is much appreciated. We had a lovely walk and a lollipop hunt when we got back. We played snap apple. HAPPY HALLOWEEN.

Dancing raisins.

We did an experiment on Thursday using raisins, sparkling and still water. It was great fun. We put the raisins in the still water first and they sank to the bottom Then each child put one raisin in the sparkling water and they all started to move to the top and looked liked they were dancing. We had a long discussion on why this happened and I encouraged them to try it out at home. We left the raisins in the glass overnight and had another chat the following morning . on why they were all at the bottom of the glass.

School grounds tidy up.

We decided to do do a clean up around the school on Wednesday. The kids were very excited putting on the aprons and getting the grabbers. It was a lovely sunny day and they found lots of rubbbish. They shared the litter grrabbers. We put the litter. in a big bag and put it in the big grey bin. The whlole place looked much tidier.

We have been checking our bulb in water every day and the vase is now full of roots and the shoot is just visible. We will leave it outside on the press when the shoot is a little bigger.

Apple trees and apple prints.

The kids painted apple trees, coloured apples red, cut them out and glued them on. On Thursday we made apple prints using real apples with forks for handles. They cut them out. We learned a poem titled " If I were an appple...... and we learned all about appples. we had an apple tasting before lunch one day.

We planted 3 Hyacinth bulbs, 1 in water and 2 in compost. We keep them in a press for the first few weeks to stimulate root and bud growth. We check the bulb in water daily to watch root growth and we mark it on the glass. They never forget to check. We will be watching to see which grows first and baet.

Mrs Browne lives in the country and collected blackberries at the weekend. We had a tasting and most people liked them. We had a big discussion on what they are used for.

Welcome to our page . We have 10 boys and 10 girls in our class with parents from Ireland England, Africa, Poland, and the Ukraine. We have a lovely Kidsmart computer and an Interactive whiteboard which is great. We have had lots of walks and fresh air. We are all settled in by now and enjoying school.

We were presented with our 2nd Green Flag on Tuesday May 26th at the Galway Bay Hotel. It was awarded to us for our work on the Water theme by An Taisce. We were delighted to get it after all our hard work. Thanks to all involved, the principal ,teachers , children and caretaker
